TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The 4th-ranked CSI men's basketball team kicked off the ICCU Invitational with a narrow victory over Eastern Wyoming 65-61 on Friday night.
Southern Idaho, fresh off their national runner-up finish a year ago, took the floor for the first time since the national championship, and the new-look Golden Eagles were able to start their season with a win. In a game that was a defensive slugfest throughout, the Golden Eagles found their offense in the second half. Forty of their 65 points came in the second frame, as they finished with 30 points in the paint, despite shooting only 31 percent from the field and 19 percent from deep.
A huge key in that second-half offense was freshman and Melba, Idaho, product Cutter Beus, who scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the half. Beus also finished with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Freshman Carlo Mulford was the only other Golden Eagle to finish in double figures, as it was his clutch free throws down the stretch that iced the game, on the way to 16 points in his collegiate debut.
Kobe Kesler did a little bit of everything for the Golden Eagles as he finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Guygustone Kasenga dominated the glass, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds in the win.
Berrett Wilson was huge off the bench for the Golden Eagles, finishing with six points and six rebounds, along with a game-high five steals.
The Golden Eagles will cap off their opening weekend tomorrow night as they take on Central Wyoming on day two of the ICCU Invitational.
