JEROME, Idaho - The CSI women's soccer team picked up its second win over a nationally ranked opponent on Thursday afternoon, as it defeated 17th-ranked USU-Eastern 1-0 at Founders Park.
With the second half of the conference season under way, every game is increasingly important for the race to the Scenic West Playoffs, and the Golden Eagles took a huge step forward in that race today, as they outlasted the Eagles in a very evenly played match.
Both teams recorded five shots on goal, with the Eagles ultimately outshooting CSI in total shots 18-10. The Golden Eagles were able to weather the storm early in the first half as USU-Eastern was able to get off multiple shots in the opening minutes of the second frame.
The lone goal of the match came on a penalty kick from Brielle Cooper in the 55th minute, as she was fouled deep in the opposition's side of the field and was able to convert the free try.
Presley Houghton came close a few times to giving the Golden Eagles a second goal, as she finished with three shots on goal in the victory.
Avery Charlesworth was spectacular in goal for the Golden Eagles, making five saves on her way to a clean sheet.
The Golden Eagles now gear up for a rematch with Salt Lake, which currently sits atop the Scenic West standings, on Saturday. The Bruins defeated the Golden Eagles 3-1 back on September 19.
