Idaho's nonprofit sector is a powerful force for good, strengthening communities, driving economic growth and improving lives across our state. Our new State of the Nonprofit Sector report puts some big numbers behind that impact.
Nonprofits are Idaho's fifth-largest private-sector employer and contribute more than $8 billion annually to our state's economy. Idahoans contribute approximately $658 million in charitable giving each year, while nonprofit partnerships with government support another $600 million in projects and services that communities rely on every day.
These numbers tell an incredible story about what nonprofits accomplish. They also point to a growing challenge: our report estimates nonprofits need an additional $200 million annually to meet the increasing demand for services across Idaho.

By the numbers
When most people think about nonprofits, they often think about the important work being done in their communities. They may not realize the sector is also a major economic driver. Nonprofits employ thousands of Idahoans, attract investment, strengthen local economies and help make our communities vibrant places to live, work and raise families.
The report also highlights the critical role that philanthropy plays in sustaining this work. Individual donors, families, businesses and foundations provide approximately $658 million in annual support, helping nonprofits deliver everything from arts and cultural programs to housing assistance, youth development, conservation efforts and senior services.
Government partnerships are equally important. Across Idaho, nonprofits work alongside local, state and federal agencies to provide services that improve quality of life and strengthen communities. Whether it's Meals on Wheels, after-school programming, senior centers, Main Street revitalization projects or countless other initiatives, these collaborations help ensure resources reach the people and places that need them most.
The future of the sector
Yet even with strong community support and dedicated partnerships, many nonprofits are stretched thin. Idaho remains one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and demand for services continues to increase. Nonprofit leaders across the state report rising costs, workforce challenges and growing community needs, all while operating with limited resources.
That's why the estimated $200 million funding gap is more than just a number. It represents opportunities to serve more families, support more children, strengthen more communities and ensure that Idahoans can access the services and programs they need to thrive.
The good news is that Idaho has a long tradition of generosity. Every charitable gift, whether large or small, plays a role in strengthening the nonprofit organizations that make our communities better.
