Break out the hiking books, dust off your old tent and get ready for adventure: National Park Week is upon us.
From April 15 to 23, the National Park Service will host a variety of special events to celebrate its beautiful parks. Visitors can even gain free access to the parks on the weekends of April 15-16 and 22-23. And with a total of 59 national parks to choose from, there's something for everyone, from the red sandstone of Arches to the dense forests of Acadia.
In that spirit, WanderBat, a travel research site by Graphiq, found the most popular national parks in America. Using data from the NPS, WanderBat ranked each national park by its total number of recreational visits in 2016.
Most of America's national parks are in the West, so it's no surprise that eight of the top 10 most popular parks are in Western states. But the No. 1 spot is located in the East, and gets nearly twice as many visitors as the second-ranked park.
