TWIN FALLS — Phoebe Valdez and Madison Bailey each scored twice, while Leslie Varela, Maddie Glascock and Alexa Rierson added a goal apiece as the Bruins rolled to a 7-0 victory over Burley to open conference play.
“We actually got off to a slow start,” head coach Katie Kauffman said. “But in the second half we were clicking with our passing. We figured out how to play against their high back-end and we started clicking. Defensively, we smothered the ball before they could mount any kind of attack.”
Despite a relatively rough start to the season — splitting four non-conference games — Kauffman said her team might be a bit ahead of where last year’s state championship game team was at the same point.
Phoebe Valdez, author of two goals, including a left-footed ball, likes her team’s diversity on offense.
“The thing that has me most excited is how many goal scorers we have every game,” Valdez said. “Anyone has the ability to take the lead, say, ‘Hey, this is going to be my game.’ Every game we have various people scoring. It is really exciting to see that all-around, well-rounded depth.”
