Kimberly 48, Kellogg 45

MERIDIAN — The Bulldogs overcame poor shooting to advance to the 3A state semifinals.

Thursday marked Kimberly’s first state tournament appearance since 2011, and the Bulldogs reached the semifinals for the first time since 2008.

Kimberly fell behind 24-21 at halftime on Thursday, but it opened the third quarter on a 14-5 run. The Wildcats kept the game close, but the Bulldogs held on thanks largely to rebounding and free-throw shooting.

The Bulldogs shot 32.6 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range (43.2 and 29.4 percent, respectively, for Kellogg), but they outrebounded the Wildcats 37-26, including 16-6 on the offensive glass. They also outscored Kellogg 11-0 on second-chance points.

Kimberly shot 16-of-23 from the free-throw line, while Kellogg was 8-of-19.

Kimberly senior Trey Garey scored a team-high 12 points (3-of-11 on field goals) and grabbed nine rebounds, while Noah Mooney had 10 points (4-of-5) and Taylor Holcomb had five points (2-of-6) and a game-high 11 boards.

The Bulldogs (19-5) will face Shelley at 6:15 p.m. Friday back at Meridian High School, hoping to reach their first state title game since 2008.

CALDWELL — A huge run helped the Vikings reach the 1A Division I state semifinals for the third time in four seasons.

Valley led 16-11 after one quarter, but Riverstone tied it at 16-16 early in the second, prompting Vikings coach Brian Hardy to call a timeout. Valley then caught fire, finishing the quarter on a 20-0 run to take a 36-16 lead into halftime. The score ballooned to 50-22 late in the third quarter.

“They responded well after we regrouped,” Hardy said.

Valley junior Zane Mussmann scored 18 points (7-of-10 from the field) and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game-highs. Nick Anderson added 12 points (6-of-7), and fellow junior Jason Hardy had six points (2-of-9) and a game-high six assists.

The Vikings (18-5) will face Ambrose in the semifinals at 6:15 p.m. Friday back at Vallivue High School.

Ambrose upset No. 2-ranked Prairie 57-55 in the first round on Thursday. Prairie beat Valley in the 2015 and 2017 state semifinals, and Hardy said his team was looking forward to some payback against the Pirates in this year’s semis. But the No. 3 Vikings aren’t complaining about Friday’s date with the Archers.

“We’re excited to play them,” Hardy said, “because they’re in the winner’s bracket.”
