Filer 44, Kimberly 43

KIMBERLY — The fourth-seeded Wildcats shocked the No. 1 Bulldogs in the first round of the Sawtooth Central Idaho tournament.

Filer built a nine-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and withstood a last-gasp push from Kimberly.

“Filer played a good game,” Kimberly coach Stanley Watts said. “We didn’t shoot real well, but no excuses. We’ve gotta play better.”

Filer only had one conference win going into Monday (49-44 at Buhl on Jan. 9), and it fell to Kimberly 38-25 and 25-20 in their two regular-season meetings. Filer coach Mike Amaya said his team did a good job of breaking Kimberly’s full-court press on Monday, and the Wildcats’ defense was active in the first three quarters.

“You just want them to buy into whatever you’re preaching,” Amaya said. “The girls have really bought in the last couple weeks.”

Ella Fischer scored 15 points for the Wildcats (6-16), who face No. 2 Buhl at 8 p.m. Tuesday at CSI in the district tournament semifinals.

Demee Rosenkrance scored a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs (12-10), who play No. 3 Gooding in a loser-out game Tuesday night at CSI, right before the Filer-Buhl game.

BUHL — The No. 2-seeded Indians held off the third-seeded Senators in the first round of the Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference tournament.

Buhl coach Kody Bingham said his team played strong team defense, and the offense did just enough.

“You start making some shots, and things go well,” he said. “A lot of girls stepped up and played hard.”
