ARCO — Dietrich High School’s 2016 football season came to a heartbreaking end in the state playoffs. Almost exactly one year later, the Blue Devils were again bounced from the 1A Division II playoffs, and the same team eliminated them.

Unlike Dietrich’s crazy 28-26 loss last year at home, Thursday’s road game was never close. Butte County rolled to a 58-12 win to advance to the 1A-DII quarterfinals.

Even accounting for an injury to star running back Garrett Astle, Dietrich’s loss to the Pirates last season was an upset. The Blue Devils were 9-0 heading into that game and had beaten Butte County 32-20 early in the regular season. Dietrich was the No. 1 seed out of District 4, and Butte County was the No. 2 seed from District 5-6.

In that Nov. 4 quarterfinal game, the Pirates scored with less than a minute remaining to snag the victory.

Thursday marked the first meeting between the teams since the 2016 playoff thriller, and the context was different. Dietrich, which graduated a bunch of key players last year, was the second seed out of the Sawtooth West Conference this fall. Butte County earned the top seed in its district.

The Pirates marched down the field and scored within three minutes of the opening kickoff Thursday night. Dietrich’s offense stalled, and Butte County scored again to go ahead 14-0. It was 22-0 after one quarter.

The Pirates built the lead to 36-0 at halftime thanks to several Devil turnovers, including a red zone interception down 22-0 early in the second quarter. That scoring opportunity was the best Dietrich would get until the late third, when the score had reached 58-0.

Senior Kade Shaw scored both touchdowns for the Blue Devils, who finished the season with a 7-3 record.
