TWIN FALLS — The College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball team broke several school records, including most points scored in a single game, in its 199-118 win over Planet Athlete Academy Friday night on the first day of the Coca-Cola Invitational.
“I never even imagined something like this,” CSI head coach Jared Phay said over the phone after the game. “Once we got up on them, they kinda abandoned everything, and it turned into an open gym.”
CSI’s previous-best scoring game was on Jan. 3, 2008, when it scored 160 against Montana Western.
On Friday against Planet Athlete, a prep team, the Golden Eagles also broke the school record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 20, and the most rebounds in a single game with 87.
“I didn’t even know what to say in timeouts,” Phay said.
All 14 of the CSI players who entered Friday’s game scored at least seven points, and 11 scored in double figures. Keegan Hansen led the way with 27 points (10-of-15 from the field, 7-of-10 from 3), followed by Roberto Gittens (25 points) and Charles Jones Jr. (23).
Malik Porter had 12 points and 16 rebounds, and Tomas Domingos chipped in 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 61.8 percent from the field (76-of-123), 44.4 percent from 3-point range (20-of-45) and 77.1 percent from the free-throw line (27-of-35).
“We weren’t trying to run it up or anything,” Phay said. “I told the guys, ‘If they’re not gonna get back in transition, we have to play the right way and push the ball.’”
UPDATE (12/2): The 199 points broke more than just CSI's record. The total is the most ever scored by an NJCAA men's basketball team in a single game, according to the NJCAA record book. The previous high was 173 points, scored by Temple (Texas) Junior College against SW Christian College in the 1994-95 season. SW Christian scored 126 points in the loss.
The most points ever scored by an NCAA Division I team in one game is 186, tallied by Loyola Marymount against Alliant (aka U.S.) International in 1991. The score was 186-140. Alliant's Kevin Bradshaw scored 72 points in the loss, breaking a record previously set Pete Maravich for most points scored by one player against a Division I opponent.
