LAS VEGAS — The College of Southern Idaho baseball team rebounded from a season-opening loss on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep on Friday.

The Golden Eagles earned 2-1 and 6-2 wins over Scottsdale Community College, which beat them 14-4 a day earlier.

In game one, CSI sophomore right-hander Mason Foltz threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings on four hits and three strikeouts. Freshman righty Charlie Fry got the save thanks to a game-ending strikeout with two outs and two runners on.

In game two, CSI sophomore righty pitched five scoreless innings on four hits and six strikeouts.

At the plate for the Golden Eagles, freshmen Hayden Leatham and Nolan Walker went 2-for-3 in each game.

CSI (2-1) plays Scottsdale again on Saturday afternoon to end the series.

CSI softball starts sharp, fizzles

YUMA, Ariz. — The CSI softball team began Friday’s three-game slate at the Arizona Western Shootout with a 12-9 win over No. 6-ranked Yavapai College, which it beat last week. But the Golden Eagles fell 9-1 to No. 4 Central Arizona College (which they also beat last week) and 5-3 to Phoenix College.

Against Yavapai, Melanie Groenewegen went 3-for-5, and Tristin Evans hit 2-for-4. Hadlie Henderson gave up five runs (one earned) and four hits in 4.1 innings, and she struck out three.

Though CSI’s bats mostly struggled against Central Arizona, Siearrah Anderson went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, and Kassidie Brooks hit a solo home run.

In the third game, Groenewegen went 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Anjalee Batchelor hit 2-for-4 and also recorded two doubles.

The Golden Eagles (6-4) conclude the Shootout Saturday against South Mountain CC and Glendale CC.
