Joey Martarano is giving football one more try, and he will be playing close to home.
The Fruitland High graduate and former Boise State linebacker confirmed via text message Tuesday he intends to join the College of Idaho football team this fall.
Though he said course work needs to be in order before he can enroll, Martarano plans on playing linebacker for the Yotes in 2018 as a senior.
Martarano had 120 tackles in three seasons with the Broncos. He played minor league baseball in the Chicago Cubs’ system in the summers of 2014 and 2015 and did not play the sport in 2016 but left Boise State in March 2017 to pursue baseball. He was cut by the Cubs in April after hitting .250 last season in Single-A. An ankle injury hampered him in spring training this year.
Since Martarano’s five-year NCAA eligibility clock began when he started at Boise State in 2013, he could not resume his career at that level, but the NAIA has no such restrictions. The Yotes went 6-5 last season, winning five of their last six, their best record since football was revived in 2014.
Martarano said in May, “I definitely like the idea of playing one more year of football.”
