Cardinals host the Pirates

QUESTION: With Indians shortstop Lindor starting the season on the DL, doesn’t that provide the Cards a nice trade window to move a combo of blocking players like Gyorko-Munoz, and O’Neill-J. Martinez for a stud starting pitcher? The Indians already had Kluber or Bauer on the block.

GOOLD: Wouldn't be a surprise if a conversation of some sort took place. The Cardinals and Cleveland had discussions about Jose Martinez, and Cleveland was one of the teams that had interest in him and Tommy Pham. The Cardinals had thoughts of flipping Martinez to Cleveland for a reliever at one point, though it doesn't seem like that got them far.

Follow-up: Any chance the Cards buy low on someone like lefty Gio Gonzalez as a spot starter or No. 5 starter, just to get some balance in the rotation?

GOOLD: Always a chance. I have heard mixed reviews this week on whether they see Gonzalez as a fit. It was mentioned to me by a source a few weeks ago as a possible add for the Cardinals later, and then within the past few days here in Florida, I've heard Gonzalez described as not the fit they want.
