It irritates me that the Times-News keeps running op-ed pieces by Lenore Skenazy, the woman who advocates letting children roam free like upscale chickens. She has made a career for herself complaining about helicopter parenting, but she exaggerates everything she touches.
Sunday, Aug. 11, you ran a piece she wrote about a 6-year-old in New Zealand who was killed by a garbage truck while riding alone on a scooter. She says children ought to be given plenty of freedom and should not be considered to be "on the brink of death" all the time.
Previous generations of parents, who had lots of children, could perhaps spare one or two, but these days, when people generally have far fewer children, we can’t spare even one and watch them like hawks. This can and must be done artfully, without crippling the kids autonomy.
I think Skenazy gives bad advice. Let’s let her fly from her perch on the pages of the Times-News.
