Idaho voters soon will be electing a new State Treasurer for the first time in 20 years. Here’s why I should be your choice:

As an owner in a family business, retired CPA, former chief financial officer of a large Idaho company, and lifelong Republican, I care deeply about public financial responsibility. We too often see government at every level making poor financial decisions, spending money unnecessarily, or lacking transparency. I will aggressively address these issues as your State Treasurer.

I was a member of Idaho’s Endowment Fund Investment Board for over 14 years, helping guide the investment of over $2 billion of Endowment Funds for the Idaho Land Board. The portfolio grew during my tenure through the use of conservative investing principles, earning very attractive returns. As a result, hundreds of millions of dollars were distributed for the benefit of Idaho public schools. It was a valuable and relevant experience – one that along with my extensive private-sector business background prepared me well for the challenges facing our next State Treasurer. I take great pride in running a tight ship, collaborating and exceeding goals with close attention to detail.

My wife, Joy, and I have been married for 39 years. We have been business partners for over 20 years operating a restaurant group in Idaho employing nearly 200 people. Her personal knowledge of my qualifications and background has Joy enthusiastically supporting my decision to run for State Treasurer.

My decision and growing excitement about the prospect of running came after learning more about the breadth and scale of the financial responsibilities of the office. The scope includes many stakeholders including counties, public schools, legislators and more. Treasurer Crane and his team have been gracious in explaining the responsibilities, as have Idaho bankers, accountants, attorneys and elected officials.

State Treasurer is not a high-profile position. My campaign likely won’t get much attention from the news media, but it is a Constitutional office that needs a qualified financial professional, who will carefully and transparently handle and invest billions of taxpayer dollars while maintaining Idaho’s exceptionally strong credit rating.

My leadership skills and my expertise in investing, accounting and financial management will help the Treasurer’s Office make sound, secure investments and enhance public confidence in the oversight and employment of Idaho’s public funds.

Financial executives and public officials who know me well, have been extremely encouraging about my candidacy. They understand my strong and relevant background, my enthusiasm about the Office. My commitment is to serve the people of Idaho.

After all, that’s what this office is all about – protecting your money and serving your financial interests. My travels throughout Idaho in the past eight months have reinforced my determination to be YOUR State Treasurer.

The next step is also yours, so I humbly ask for your vote on May 15. Thank you.

Tom Kealey is running for Idaho Treasurer.
