RUPERT • A 2-year-old Rupert boy died at 2:30 a.m. today in a Boise hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

Minidoka County Prosecutor Lance Stevenson said the toddler was shot by his 3-year-old brother. Rupert Police Chief Randy White said the shooting happened in northeast Rupert, at about noon Wednesday.

The names of the boys have not yet been released. Stevenson said the case remains under investigation by the Rupert Police Department and Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

White said the boy was taken to Minidoka Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon and later transferred by air ambulance to a Boise hospital.

Stevenson said he will not decide whether to file charges in the case until all related investigations are completed.

"This could have been a tragic accident or someone could have been responsible," Stevenson said.
