JEROME — An employee at a livestock sale yard in town was killed Tuesday in a freak accident.

Stephen Gumb, 66, of Jerome was working cattle in a corral at Producers Livestock when his horse was startled by a bull, Capt. George Oppedyk of the Jerome County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Gumb fell from the horse and was impaled on a gate handle at about 11 a.m., Oppedyk said.

“It was pretty bad,” he said.

Gumb was taken to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“It was a total freak accident,” Twin Falls Coroner Gene Turley said.
