BURLEY — Police say a Burley man was shot dead at his business Wednesday.

Police say Christopher A. Fassett, 58, was killed in a robbery gone wrong at Fassett Transmission, 436 West Main St., in Burley.

Cassia County Sheriff Jay Heward said that Luis Gabriel Ponce, 21, was arrested Thursday morning on a homicide charge after turning himself in at the sheriff’s office.

Heward said Fassett was shot twice, once in the head and once in the stomach area. His body was found by police at 434 West Main St. shortly after 5 p.m.

“Ponce confessed,” Heward said. “It appears that it was a robbery gone bad, and one thing led to another.”

Ashley Houser, owner at the nearby Reloading Center, said Fassett also lived at the business and occasionally cooked and brought food to Houser’s business. He believed Fassett had the transmission business for about five years, but business was sporadic. He didn’t hear anything suspicious Wednesday, he said.

Cassia County Undersheriff George Warrell said the sheriff’s office received a 911 call regarding a person who arrived at the business to pick up a vehicle and found Fassett unresponsive under a car.

Houser said two men speaking Spanish came over to his business Wednesday afternoon saying there was something wrong with the man across the street, and they called 911.

Staff at the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center said Ponce was being booked into jail Thursday afternoon. The Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in Ponce’s arrest.
