BURLEY — A sentencing hearing for a Burley man accused of getting a woman’s toddler to help stab her with a knife was reset Tuesday after a computer glitch failed to send out a victim notification for the hearing.

Under a plea agreement, David James Gifford, 37, pleaded guilty to one felony count of domestic violence. In return, the Cassia County Prosecutor’s Office will dismiss an enhancement charge for committing the crime in the presence of a child and felony charges of injury to a child and attempted strangulation.

A woman testified in a prior hearing that Gifford strangled, kicked and punched her until she lost consciousness on Thanksgiving Day 2017 and that he stabbed her several times with a steak knife and gave a knife to her toddler and told the child to stab her too.

The woman said Gifford restrained her while the two-year-old stabbed at her stomach and he flipped her over and told the boy to stab her again.
