It’s always interesting to hear from visitors about their perspectives on Twin Falls. They marvel at the beauty of the canyon. They remark about all the new construction. Sometimes they’ll tell you about a favorite restaurant they tried. And almost all of them will say how welcoming, friendly and hospitable our community is.
I agree. Twin Falls is pretty cool.
But go online recently and you’ll hear a much different story. Especially if you’ve been reading the yarns high-profile political activist Pamela Geller has been spinning about Twin Falls, fed to her mostly by local gadfly Julie Ruf and her ilk.
Thanks to Geller, tens of thousands of her readers now think Twin Falls is a hellhole.
Since earlier this summer, when a 5-year-old was allegedly assaulted at the Fawnbrook Apartments, Ruf has been dishing dirt to Geller, a commentator and blogger with a large following, about how refugees are ruining our city. By now we’ve all heard the story: A handful of twisted folks somehow believe the girl’s assault is clear proof that Muslims are destroying Twin Falls because the boys accused of committing the assault are Muslims or refugees or maybe both. And, oh, yeah, the mainstream media, the entire city council, city staff, the police, the county prosecutor’s office, the city’s major employers, the local community college, several state Republican lawmakers and a federal prosecutor are complicit in a conspiracy to either cover up the details of the assault, asperse the girl’s family or mislead you in an effort to promote a liberal agenda that will allow Muslims to take over our community, commit terrorism, molest our children and institute sharia law.
Or something like that. The accusations grow a little each day, and it’s hard to keep up.
It’d be almost comical if this weren’t also true: Geller and others in the anti-Muslim movement have happily typed up these scary fairy tales, which are being read by thousands of people around the world who believe Twin Falls is no longer in Idaho but sandwiched somewhere in one of Dante’s circles of hell.
“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here” isn’t exactly the phrase our economic development leaders and tourism promoters want associated with Twin Falls.
And neither do I.
So I believe it’s important to offer an alternative perspective on our fine city and look at one of Geller’s most recent columns, published last week on the Breitbart website, and see if we can’t set the record straight about our city.
Geller writes: “Ruf also recounted that one Sunday afternoon, she was with a group of Twin Falls residents that encountered a repellent prostitute soliciting outside of the local public library in broad daylight, three blocks from the police station. She was an older harlot who had already attracted a line of Muslim immigrant males waiting in their cars for their turn.”
Who knows what Ruf and her friends saw outside the library, but I checked with police who said they aren’t aware of any situation even remotely like the one Geller describes. There was one case of woman from California and a man from Mexico in a car near the library recently in the middle of the night, but it certainly wasn’t an old hooker and a parade of Muslim johns. In fact, police have investigated prostitution at four Twin Falls motels in the past 80 days, and none of the stings appeared to involve refugees.
Geller writes of the troubles the Fawnbrook girl’s family is having finding new housing in Twin and says: “It is almost impossible to find a place to rent because of the housing shortage due to the sudden crush of refugees.”
Sure, rentals are getting harder to find in Twin Falls, but it’s not because of a “sudden crush of refugees.” The College of Southern Idaho’s refugee resettlement center has been relocating about 300 people a year like clockwork for three decades — there’s nothing sudden about that. The rental problem has little to do with refugees and everything to do with our booming economy and the fact we’ve added 5,000 new jobs in the food-manufacturing sector alone and thousands of new residents who’ve moved to the area to fill them.
Geller writes: “Ruf told me: ‘In the last four months the demographics of our area have dramatically shifted and we’ve been profoundly affected by what we suspect is secondary migration. We locals intend to survey the population to discover the source of this massive influx.”
This should sound pretty bizarre to anyone who actually lives in Twin Falls. Does the city seem dramatically different than it did in March? And who, exactly, is being “profoundly affected” by this phantom influx?
Something terrible happened to that poor girl at the Fawnbrook Apartments. Scores of children in southern Idaho are molested or abused every year, and that’s heartbreaking. But Geller is using this one case to drive a sickening political agenda.
See, Geller wants the world to think Twin Falls is being overrun by Muslim perverts who are destroying our city. She’s made a career spreading such nonsense on the backs of communities like ours.
But her vision of an American apocalypse isn’t what I see happening in Twin Falls — at all. The Twin Falls I know is a welcoming community, where my wife and I feel perfectly safe raising our two girls.
We’ve never had to push through a line of Muslims waiting for their turn with a hooker when we visit the library. We live in a growing and prosperous city, where new houses and apartments are springing up every day. It’s a place where it’s easy to find a job, where people work hard. It’s a beautiful city, and I’m incredibly proud and lucky to live here.
I think most of us also feel this way. Do we have problems? Yeah, every community does. But they’re nothing close to the horrors Geller paints.
Geller had planned to visit Twin Falls this week and hold a rally on the courthouse steps, but she canceled. I guess it’s just easier to spread second-hand garbage on the internet instead of taking time to come see for herself.
Too bad. I wish she could have seen the Twin Falls I know.

Matt,
When the sexual battery occurred at Dietrich you were right on hand to report all the details, including the coat hanger. You didn't report names, except the adults.
On the Fawnbrook case, it was 17-18 days for you reported anything. Only when social media put a cramp in your style did you respond.
The Dietrich case all were Citizens.
On the Fawnbrook case the actors were refugee's.
See the problem?
I remember Twin Falls way back further than you do. In the Summer our demographics turned brown, as our Latino Bros and Sisters came in to work the fields.
We don't judge people by their skin color; we are concerned about National Security.
Your accusations that we are prejudiced is totally off base.
You just don't get it; your stuck on this skin color thing and the fact our plight is world wide has a lot to do with TN and it's reporting.
TN has helped created this anti refugee problem and it's time some one said so. If you hadn't kept writing stories about it; it would have long ago been forgot about. I know these people. Some people objected and you immediately tore into them with name calling and innuendo's.
It would be interesting to know why it took so long to report on Fawnbrook when TN was so "Johnny on the Spot," about Dietrich?
What say you?
Well stated, Tumbleweed, I think you have expressed well the difference between a sense of caution and blatant racism.
Very simple response: The accused in the Dietrich case are being charged as adults, so those details were immediately available, Danny. Not so in the Fawnbrook case, where we all know that the case was sealed because the accused are juveniles.
To charge a Juv. as an adult it takes a Gibbs hearing. This is complicated and takes time. It isn't like you can arrest a Juv. as an adult. You broke this story at Dietrich well before there was time for a Gibbs hearing.
I think the kids at Dietrich deserved the same consideration as the kids at Fawnbrook.
People who object to the refugee program deserve a chance to explain themselves w/o your name calling and w/o being categorized as " Liars, Bigots."
Your Newspaper is very much biased towards the refugees. That is okay with me I really don't have anything against them. I don't like them forced down my throat and told it doesn't matter and I'm a "Fraidy Cat."
Europe's breaking up over the refugee's.
How many people do they have to kill?
They say it's the Muslim's? Okay what does a Muslim look like-that is silly.
It's time to use some caution that is all I'm saying; be more balanced in your reporting Matt, your obviously way left.
Hopefully they will get some way to vet these folks; together we might find a way. Your way of one side against the other isn't going to work.
You could have reported there had been a crime at Fawnbrook, it was under investigation and released the jest of the crime w/o hurting the Jvs. or the refugee program.
Silence was NOT golden in this case.
You guys knew about it and should have reported what you knew. You chose not to and here we are. I've known you for quite awhile; no one stops you from getting information if you want it. You were a big pain in the rear end when you were a reporter digging for everything and everyone.
I don't care if the people who are coming in here are little green men from Mars; we have to use some common sense on who comes here.
A little caution is due here; using Europe as a template is not working.
I'll never stop reading your Newspaper but I disagree with TN attitude towards this.
And don't say you don't lean towards the refugee's cause it's obvious you do. Don't the people who live here have a voice from you too?
By the way, we're not all immigrants. My Family and many families from the MV ancestors came here in the 1600s. If you could get here you could come, you didn't need to immigrate.
Respectfully,
Danny
I especially appreciated the way you handled the murder of that young man in Twin Falls. Showing his dead leg sprawled out from the white sheet. You simply want to sell papers and then tell some news. In that order. You used that boy, you used the people of Dietrich, and you are using the refugee program. You may have had ideals at one some point in your career, but don’t for once second claim you report unbiased news. You do what readers and subscribers you have left a disservice by saying so. I always get a feel of some kind of self-righteous, pompous chastising arrogance from the editorials you write. If you have a mirror I would highly suggest you look into it deeply, at your own reflection and do a mental tally. Many people know you, the real you. And the real you has NO RIGHT to call the rest of the Magic Valley to whatever false repentance you are preaching. You and your paper aren’t here to save us, we don’t need your kind of “saving”. We want you to report the news; untainted and unbiased, without your self-righteous condemnation of those you think need your personal "enlightenment".
Danny you never cease to amaze me! Remember when you wanted to chase everyone out of town that agreed with the last opinion page editor? You're a law and order man along the lines of Boss Hog. The good ol days are over. Everyone screams about what and how the TImes writes and presents the information. When in doesn't jive with what is "the party line" then it's a liberal rag that fails to consider our national security. Hogwash. Statistically refugees do not have any higher rate of violence than the citizens of this great country. National security in your context is a ruse. Homeland Security, the FBI, local and state law enforcement are doing a good job and to state otherwise is pandering. Walk down the street of Twin Falls and ask 50 people how they feel about The Fawnbrook case and they would tell you it's time to get over it. Twin Falls needs to heal and all the rancor and bad publicity only prolongs the process.
Danny,
The Dietrich case allegedly took place on 10/23 and was first reported on 11/9= 17 days. The Fawnbrook case allegedly took place on 6/2 and was reported on 6/20=18 days. I don't get your claim. Type both in the search engine on this site and that is what comes up-complete with comments and all. What say you?
The Times News reported the story the way it should be reported with the victim being the top priority and the information given to them by the Police Department. According to you and so many others the paper should be jumping on the bandwagon and posting lies and innuendos about what happened. Just like on social media where those who have absolutely no facts throw out those same lies. The Prosecutor, the Police Department, the City Council and all of those involved in keeping this community safe and secure are doing their jobs and trying like heck to keep this civil but like so many out there you and others have to make it like there is some ridiculous conspiracy to cover up anything and everything that goes on in the Valley and across the Nation. I am not someone who doesn't have concerns when it comes to different ethnic groups coming into town but to put blame on our leaders for doing the job they were hired to do is just wrong. To put blame on one group of people due to a crime committed by a few is wrong. Do we condemn all blacks for what a few do? Do we condemn all police officers for what a few do?? No way did all of these people get behind closed doors and come up with the idea of keeping some big dark secret under wraps. We are gong to continue to have an influx of different cultures move into the area no matter what. It is how we handle it that makes a difference. I feel our community leaders did their job in keeping the victim and her family out of the spotlight and the more people come out with we need to know the more unsecure the identity of this young victim is. Let's hope this is solved and the perpetrators are brought to justice according to the law that protects the victim in all assaults cases. In the meantime as you said it could all be over with given people shut the h-ll up and let authorities finish their work
You will never change the minds of the anti refugee "true believers". They will follow their dogma over a cliff like lemmings. The best we can hope for, is to influence the thought processes of those who the unemotional facts. We also need to keep the spotlight focused on the Hinerich Himmlers of our time. We need to keep exposing them for the hacks that they are.
The TN reported on behavior, no names were called. BTW there are Caucasian Muslims also. Very well written opinion piece, Matt.
The Times News is absolutely biased. Your views if favor of the refugee program shirt clearly through everything you write. The article about the Fawnbrook incident was not handled correctly. I have not read 1 article in which the victims family was interviewed at all. Has anyone else? I read the news to get the facts. I want an unbiased story that presents me with the whole story from all sides so I can make an informed decision. I am certainly not getting it here. I am done with Times News. I will never buy this paper again and I am not alone. I think many of the articles are even sarcastic, antagonistic, and offensive. I am out.
Easy there Froggymommy!
How you gonna know the names they call us if you don't take the TN?
They are biased so are all the rest of the News.
Not taking the paper doesn't help, I've tried that.
At least here you can write your opinion on things as long as you abide by he rules.
Sometimes it helps just to vent. Not taking the paper you hurt no one but yourself, i've done that.
Good Post!
I would like to address one point in this article that rankles a little:
"See, Geller wants the world to think Twin Falls is being overrun by Muslim perverts who are destroying our city. She’s made a career spreading such nonsense on the backs of community’s like ours."
Setting aside the problems that Geller has maintaining her 15 minutes of fame, examples of acts against our country by an avowed and organized list of enemies abound. (And they are muslim, by the way, and Iran, our president's new business partner, is the number one funding source-- according to who? Our own state department.) It may or may not have happened here in Bedford Falls yet, but it is certainly happening elsewhere; and as cities ARE being destroyed, and acts of a violent sexual nature ARE occurring, the need for being properly informed, aware of, and cautious about it, is not nonsense. Unfortunately it is happening on such a grand scale and weekly schedule, we grow numb to what should otherwise still shock us with horror. Had the people who were assaulted in any of dozens of examples been better prepared, could those events have been prevented?
If these children involved in this assault had not been muslim none of us would know a thing about it because this paper would not have reported it, and probably should not have in the first place, because it involves children--as far as I know anyway the paper does not run stories about white kids bullying each other. Or brown kids. Or yellow kids. Or red or plaid or paisley. But somehow, the Times News saw this one differently.
I appreciate this article. Twin Falls is a growing community and has good points as well as negative points, just like every other city. I appreciate the hard work the Refugee Center people do, it's not an easy job.
Matt, you need to move back to Montana. The lefties there are trying to bring a refugee resettlement office into the state and maybe, just maybe the Montana Standard will re-hire you, after all your work here is done....
I am Lalek.
If these City managers etc and our good ol friendly newspaper want this kind of people moving in and changing our very way of life, then maybe they should move to another country so they can live just like they do, instead of ruining our beautiful city.
"Our way of life"? Who comprises "our"?
I have been pretty silent on the events going on here in Twin Falls concerning the rape of a very precious little girl. One reason is I believe with all my heart that God will get vengeance and justice for His precious little one. Second reason is I have been directly involved in all of this and will not do anything to harm this case. And with out giving any details, I just want to say SHAME SHAME SHAME on you Times News. You are wanting to point fingers at everyone instead of doing some hard core investigation and exposing the truth. Your actions are showing your true motives. You know what I find very interesting? How so many people can believe a lie over truth. This is a crime done to a little girl and the more everyone tries to hide things and silence things just leads me to think there is something to hide. What are you afraid of? Who are you afraid of? You can try to play this down, but I am witnessing with my own eyes the hurtful things being done to this family by people who are suppose to be protecting them. What has this little girl done except to trust and believe she lives in a safe place and only thinks the best of everyone she meets. Was that her mistake? Is that why she and the family are being treated so poorly because they made the mistake to think the best about everyone? Including the Muslim boys who have been put in her neighborhood with out being properly vetted? And this is not a hate statement it is a truth. They are from a different culture. And we brought them here without teaching them our house rules. So I don't really blame them, we are paying for choices of not taking wise council and considering the cost of bringing them here and I am not talking money. It has been at the cost of a little girls innocents.
And Shame again on you Times News to think people are that shallow that she is making Twin Falls look like a bad place to live. Pamela Gellar has said nothing about our community I don't even know how you came up with that? I think you are believing a lot of things that are not true. Please give references to where she is saying that "Twin Falls is a hellhole"? Again are you assuming things? Stick to reporting the facts Matt Christiansen you are making Twin Falls look stupid.
See the quotation marks that Matt used in his article? They indicate another authors spoken words or writings. Most of them can be found here:

If I didn't live here and based my opinion of TF on the above articles, I would think TF was a "hellhole" Fortunately, I like to think critically and demand evidence.
Hi Glenn, Please read my comment posted today. I live in the UK and after reading some of the threads on here I felt compelled to post a comment. Most Americans seem almost clueless as to what is actually going on in Europe and that Islamic ideology actually condones raping of children!!. The rape of this child is only the start if your town tries to shield the attacker out of fear of racist labeling. I am horrified that anyone especially an experienced journalist would basically call a 5 year old child a liar. I thought the British media had a liberal bias but American media are a disgrace.
I am constantly amazed at those pushing the pro-refugee agenda. They will go to any lengths to promote it, including allowing a little girl to be raped and traumatized, without coming to her defense.
“Scores of children in southern Idaho are molested or abused every year.” That is your reasoning for brushing off this little girl and her family, because it is so commonplace in this area that we should all be desensitized and just get over it?
How is that for promoting Twin Falls?
“allegedly assaulted” is a nice way of minimizing the violence that happened to her. Let's not let anyone realize the whole truth - that wouldn't work for your pro-refugee agenda, would it?
By Idaho statute, this was a Rape.
Did you explain to her that her pain is just a “scary fairy tale”? Did you tell her, and her parents, they were just fear-mongering and running off the tourism? Oh, that's right, you never talked to anyone from the family. Gotcha.
There is a report of a group that investigated and interviewed the family. You can find it here: http://redoubtnews.com/blog/2016/06/28/cows-investigates-twin-falls-child-rape/
Don't worry, we won't stop reading the TN. We will be here whenever we want the light, snopes/government-approved stories for entertainment. However, if we want the real truth, we will check out alternative media.
I was a slick sleeve on the TFPD, when Matt first came to town as a Reporter.
To tell him he couldn't have information on anything was a Declaration of War.
He was tough! And usually got his way, atleast part of it.
He really tuned us up down at the PD. He has also declared war on our local Govts. over transparency. He did that in a Editorial.
For him to stay silent on the Fawnbrook thing just isn't in his character.
Something is fishy, that's why I wrote what I did.
TF is not a the kind of hole someone called it, I love the place, and the people in it.
I wouldn't think of quitting reading the TN, it's one of the first things I learned to read, I'm 67.
TN is just as much my Newspaper as it is anyone's.
Anyway I thought I should write an explanation on why I wrote to Matt the way I did, it doesn't jibe. He's a good reporter, he knows better than to take sides but he has.
Thank you-
Danny
This thread is what concerns me about our world today. Despite all evidence and facts to the contrary, people continue to shout "conspiracy" because the evidence doesn't reinforce their deep seated fears.
Can I get an Amen!?
It's also troubling that despite statements from our prosecutor, people are still calling the crime a rape. Yes it was probably a sexual assault but not a rape. Also I'm fairly certain that the family has been interviewed by investigators. To me it seems like it is all being handled by the book.
I had to chime in. I work with children at risk and know some law. In most states penetration of any opening of the body would in fact be the violation you just described. Just FYI.
jj,
Assault is the verbal threat coupled by the present ability. Battery is the actual touching. Probably a Sexual Battery. Chief says no rape.
One of, if not the most, visible parts of Twin Falls that is blatantly and certainly NOT representative of our community is the progressive liberalism spewing out of the Twin Falls Times News!
Chobani Yogurt built a huge yogurt factory Twin Falls. Chobani is owned by a Muslim, and 60% of its workforce is Muslim immigrants imported into Twin Falls. Why do you think they're so desperate to cover up bad news about Muslim "refugees"? Chobani is now that town's bread and butter, which may be the reason local media wants to downplay this story. BOYCOTT CHOBANI Yogurt, contact your senators and local reps, and don't let the media get away with lies.
Your theory doesn't seem to add up. There aren't enough immigrants and refugees of any faith to equal 60% of Chobani's workforce. Almost all have been hired locally. To "import" that many workers doesn't seem feasible. If you can, supply a source for your 60% figure and evidence of Chobani actually doing this. Also, there has been no cover up.
After reading some of the posts on here I felt compelled to comment especially when some on this thread are intimating the very real mass migration chaos we are experiencing here in Europe is somewhat imaginary because your main news media is blacking out the horror of mass rapes of women and children here. Europe was never anti-muslim, we hoped these people who we invited into our countries would be grateful of our welcome and would integrate into our communities. The opposite has happened and therein lies the problem. They have created their own communities where we can no longer enter including law enforcement and are trying to initiate their own laws which are barbaric and advocate wife beating and genital mutilation of children. They are attacking our way of life, demanding our women cover up at the beach, poison our dogs and put leaflets through our doors stating convert to Islam or die. Very few of these people want to live peacefully with Christians, athiests, or LGBT communities. When the numbers grow large enough chaos ensues. One recently exposed police report in the UK showed that out of 1600 muslim migrant males that had been given asylum, 900 of those males had been arrested for violent assaults and rape of women and children!! This is just one report out of thousands across Europe. So I would caution you to hold your newspapers & media accountable when they try to cover up Islamic crime or denigrate victims of those crimes and ensure your local laws are enforced.
My goodness, this can't be true, we've been assured by the local newspaper and the readers who defend them that we who are cautious about this are fear-mongers, paranoid, racists, and bigots. There must be some mistake.
I am sick of our government saying that only 25% of Muslims are radicalized. Now usually 25% wouldn't sound so bad, but when you factor in, there was 1.6 billion Muslims in 2011 and growing. In 2015 there was an estimated 3.3 million Muslims in the United States alone. So when you factor that 25%, there is 825,000 estimated radicalized Muslims living in the U.S. So not wanting Muslims, and Islam in this country is racist. First off, Muslims come in every color and nationality, so they are not a race, they are precisely a religion. Second, Islam is an ideology, not a race. Just as the Mormons that are in control of the Idaho legislature are a religion, not a race.
I've never seen anything even close to 25% are radicalized, that seems inflated by many magnitudes. Please supply your source for that percentage.
I don't know what he means by this 25% radicalized figure either. It's more like a third to half that have extremely hostile attitudes to social rights and equality, on issues ranging from homosexuality to political violence in the name of social conservatism to anti-Semitism - and this is among Muslims in the United Kingdom:
https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/7861/british-muslims-survey
Imagine that - 1 in 2 Muslims in the UK think that homosexual relationships should be illegal. That they should serve time in prison. Impressive regress. We can push back on Christian extremism but not other kinds - why, exactly?
The actual percentage is 0.00006255% a very tiny per cent age.
Unfortunately, folks, it seems that since this mediocre 'journalist' hasn't had his own daughters raped, he is unable to empathize with the disadvantaged Americans unlucky enough to be both Caucasian and the victim of unspeakable atrocities perpetrated by 'refugees' (migrants) dropped in our midst.
Pamela Geller has more integrity and courage in one pinkie than the quisling liar Matt Christensen possesses in his entire body. Notice how, like the weasel he is, he automatically goes from 'something terrible happened to the girl' to 'scores of children are molested'. To brainwashed-in-political-correctness beta-male morons like Christensen, it doesn't matter how many lives are destroyed in the process of 'refugee resettlement' - why, it's not the sadistic rape of a defenseless citizen that gets him riled up, but the RAAAACIST, Islamophobic, nativist bigots who DARE challenge political correctness and demographic change without their consent in their communities.
Matt Christensen is the reason everyone in America despises journalists and the media - they're propagandistic, smarmy liars.
Can't wait to see this paper go out of business and, with it, Matt Christensen's 'career'. Real newsmen like HL Mencken despised lying idiots like Christensen.
Get a real job, Matt!
