Erik Nordquist, cross country, Jerome High School, College of Idaho

Nordquist competed Saturday morning at the Montana Invitational in Missoula, Mont.

The freshman placed 54th overall in 27:13.30 on the 8 kilometer course, but with a number of the runners competing unattached, his adjusted place was 37th. He just barely missed scoring for his team, the first time all season he has not scored.

Hannah Newhouse, stock car racing, Twin Falls High School, Boise State

Newhouse, a freshman attending Boise State on a full scholarship as part of her sponsorship agreement with the school, qualified for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity (D4D)Combine for the third straight year, NASCAR and the school announced Tuesday.

The combine, in its 11th year, will feature 20 selected drivers competing for roughly six spots on the NASCAR D4D team. All drivers are either female or multicultural and hail from either the US, Canada or Latin America.

It will take place Oct. 13-15 in Hampton, Va.

Her car and racing suit prominently feature Boise State logos, allowing her to serve as something of an ambassador for the school when she races.
