The family of John & Arlene
Sommer are celebrating their

50 th Wedding Anniversary.
John & Arlene were wed December 27, 1969, at St. Edwards in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The Sommer family has been in the Twin Falls area since the early 1900s.The Urie
family has also been in the Twin Falls area since the early 1900s.
John was raised on the family farm, graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1964, attended CSI & U
of I. He worked over 30yrs for Gallatin Valley/Roger Brothers/RoGal/Novartis Seed Company moving
into management as his career progressed. Over the last 20 years, John has helped his brother,
Dave, farm south of Twin Falls.
Arlene was born in Philadelphia, PA. She lived up & down the Atlantic Coast as her father progressed
through his 20 years in the US Navy. Arlene graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1965 & received
degrees from the CSI, U of I, BSU. Arlene started teaching Home Economics at Filer High School,
resigning to raise their children: Eric, Becky, & Ben. Arlene returned to Filer High School in 1986 as an
English teacher. She called it a career after 33 years in 2013. Arlene enjoys spending time sewing,
quilting, & raising grandchildren.
John & Arlene helped support & teach kids through the local 4-H and FFA programs. The Sommer
house was a favorite hangout for their kid’s friends & cousins. It was often said – “make sure you’re
dressed when you come out of your room, who knows who’s sleeping on the couch”.
John & Arlene have been enjoying retirement by visiting Eric, Stacy, John, and Carter in Helena,
MT; Becky in Austin, TX; and Ben, Jenny, Brynna, & Cohen in Spokane, WA. John & Arlene’s annual
adventures often include trips to the Oregon coast, Las Vegas, San Diego, Mexico, & Canada to visit
friends & family.
The Sommers’ love has stood the test of time for 50 years.Their children would like to invite friends,
former coworkers, & family to join them in celebrating John & Arlene’s golden anniversary. An
open house will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Snake River Room, in Twin Falls, Idaho, on
Friday, August 23, 2019. Festivities begin at 3:00 PM.
