Valley will surely look different than the 2015 edition of the team that rolled to an undefeated season and 1AD1 state title. Gone are head coach Brian Ayers, record-setting quarterback Ben Taylor, and a host of other players that helped the Vikings outscore the opposition by nearly 49 points per game.
But that doesn't mean Valley won't still be a headache for the rest of the state.
Ryon Jarvis, who served as the Vikings' offensive coordinator the last two seasons, takes over for Ayers while Mike Elorrieta is set to take the reins at quarterback.
“The transition’s more a, I don’t know, a logistical thing than it is an on the field thing," Jarvis said.
A solid group of nine seniors led the Vikings to the state title a season ago. The players taking over for them realize they don't have those veterans to lean on anymore. It's now up to them to defend the crown.
And from the sound of it, Jarvis' group is more than up to the task.
"The entire dynamic of our team really changed," said Jarvis. "And so, their attitude last spring was, we kind of know that we rode the coattails of the seniors, but now it’s our time to shine. It’s our time to take over.”
