  1. The fact that Hunsaker approved Larson's teaching contract & then resigned makes me curious. Says there is guilt on Hunsaker's part. Especially since she (Hunsaker) hasn't made a public statement. I don't have any children in this class, but I do know several. This incident has changed the course of these kids lives... I hope everyone involved has learned a lesson. I am sad for the kids involved. (Remember these are 9 year-old kids we are talking about.) The kids should be the focus! FYI the parents involved have never made the statement that Ms Larson should lose her job. How is looking out for a child's mental well being considered a "witch hunt"?

  2. Bullying: the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others, involves an imbalance of social or physical power. It can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. There are three basic types of bullying: emotional, verbal, and physical. (Wikipedia) There is NO MENTION of bullying having a ‘malicious intent’. Whatever the intent was these children WERE bullied and humiliated.
Now about the Kiss the Pig assembly that the ENTIRE student body attended and got this “idea” from is ridiculous. Several students in this class have said they did NOT attend to see the parincipal and teacher get colored. The kids were given a list, provided by the teacher, to choose a REWARD for meeting their AR goal. If this teacher was so concerned about helping her students reach the goal, why was this even an option? If every student met their goal there would have been NO REWARD for the students, no child to color on. This was not presented to the kids as a consequence (punishment) for failing to meet their goal.
One parent overheard students in this class talking about the face coloring that was to happen in class the week prior to it taking place and told the teacher during PTC on the Friday before the incident that his child was NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY WAY in the face coloring. The teacher said they had not done it yet and the parent repeated that two students were not to participate. Yet this student was marked in class.
What was written and drawn on these kids’ faces is not what is being reported by Ms. Liljenquist. My niece was colored around her mouth, her eyelids were colored on and students signed their names or scribbled on her cheeks and forehead. My nephew had a goatee and his eyelids were also colored and names and scribbles on the rest of his face. This is far different than ‘hearts, stars, flowers, or war paint’ described by an individual who NEVER SAW these kids. These children were humiliated throughout the day, not only by other kids, but also authority figures in the school that day. Why was it necessary for the principal to embarrass one marked student to the point of tears and still not intervene? I had one parent contact me (her son is a good friend of my nephew) and tell me that her boy was trying to console my nephew throughout the day.
Last week I saw my niece, who was marked in this class, and said “Oh there is the beautiful smiling face I love!” She wrapped her little arms around my waist, looked up at me and whispered “Thank you” I had to fight back tears as I kissed the top of her head. Now why did this pull at my heart? Because she has said she didn’t like wearing her marks all day because she “looked stupid”. Hearts and flowers on a girl’s cheek has NEVER made a child feel stupid or ugly.
Perhaps Ms. Liljenquist, you should visit with more "key people" and get more information before making another statement on behalf of the PTO and school.
And let me add, when my daughter was struggeling in a Burley school and my husband and I were making the decision on where to move so she would be in a school to better fit her needs. Declo Elementary never responded to my request to meet with principal, school councilor, resource teacher, or acidemic supervisor. I am grateful that Oakley did and her first year of school here she scored at grade level for the first time. That is a measure of great teachers and staff!!!

  3. I find it very sad that this is now turning into a "blame game"... First, the teacher, next it was the "bad parents", and now it's the past teachers. Come on. That still doesn't explain why 42% of this class failed to meet the MINIMUM requirement, as you so clearly stated. Obviously there are serious underlying issues. I know that the parents involved just want answers, as does the rest of the community. But one thing I can't seem to wrap my head around is why NO ONE stepped in that day? I have seen MANY posts and comments about how this was a bad judgement call or terrible mistake. I agree. I was taught that as soon as a mistake is made and realized it is always best to correct it as soon as possible. So why did the teacher, faculty and staff at Declo Elementary see these kids for 5-6 HOURS that day and do NOTHING? Why were these children required to wear the marks on their faces all day, but only allowed to try and wash just before leaving school? Why did the teacher not call to explain or apologize to the parents until 2 DAYS later? I'm quite sure that Ms. Larsen is sorry... But is she sorry it ever took place or sorry that the parents found out and stood up for their children being publicly humilated?

  4. jmejean, FYI. Parents went to the LOCAL media because this issue was being swept under the rug by the principal, superintendent, & school board. This story went national because it is so absurd!!! How is this a 'bad parenting' issue when the parents were NOT notified of the AR goal?!? I know two of these kids do HOURS of homework EVERY night with their parents, grandparents, and other family members.Yes, you are right that there is bullying going on... Perhaps you should read some of the hate mail that parents are recieving from the community for standing up for their child!!!

  5. Summer Larsen is going to end up taking all the heat from this. But what about the principal who harassed some of the students after they were marked? What about the DARE officer who was in the school and saw these children and did nothing? What about the superintendent who has changed his statements? What about the parents supporting their children participating in this type of activity and fully support a teacher with a criminal record of violence? This is a sad situation.
