Premature loss

Amanda Harris holds a picture of her son Michael as she poses for a portrait Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at her parent's home in Burley Idaho. Michael was born premature and died shortly after Harris gave birth. 'You'll never get over it, but you can recover,' she says. 'You can heal.' NOTE: When photographing someone in an intimate situation, such as dealing with the grief of a premature death, be compassionate. Harris was proud to talk about the limited time she had with her son. I wanted to photograph her in a way that was flattering to both her and his memory. By utilizing a soft natural light with a clean background, and having her hold his picture, I think I achieved my goal.
