SHOSHONE – During pregame warmups of the District 4 senior 1A/2A All-Star Game, the South squad garnered significantly more attention.

The aerial displays of, among others, Raft River twins Kolten and Kayden Hitt and Declo’s Trey Ramsey were the talk of Shoshone’s gymnasium.

For the first half, that pregame display was a precursor the game itself. The South squad, which comprised players from Raft River, Declo, Oakley, Murtaugh, and Lighthouse Christian, used its superior length and leaping ability to sprint out to a 17-11 after one quarter and a 40-34 lead at halftime. In the second quarter, the South also got hot from deep and drained six three-pointers.

In the second half, the North, which comprised players from Dietrich, Shoshone, Carey, Glenns Ferry, and Valley, used the speed and full-court defensive pressure of its guards and to vault in front in the third quarter and seal the win.

The South stormed back from a eight-point deficit and had a chance to win it, but Oakley’s Hewstyn Beck missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Dietrich’s Jake Smith scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. The senior Blue Devil, fresh off setting both the 1A-DII state tournament record for single-game three-pointers and three-pointers in a tournament, drained five three-pointers in the game.

Shoshone’s Devan Bollar also scored 12 points for North, eight of which came in his squad’s 28-point third quarter, and his Indian teammate Jose Regalado added 10. Each player on the North squad at least three points.

“It was fun. It would be fun to have a team like that all the time,” said Dietrich head coach Wayne Dill, who coached the North squad. “In our practice, we worked on one out-of-bounds play, and from there, we just worked on getting the ball up the floor quickly like we like to do. I think the boys all had a good time.”

For the South, Kayden Hitt scored a team-high 18 points, and Kolten Hitt and Trey Ramsey added 12 apiece. Beck and Murtaugh’s Adan Saucedo also finished in double figures with 11 each.
