Murtaugh 44, Lighthouse Christian 39

SHOSHONE – After scoring just two points in the first quarter, both by way of free throws, Murtaugh needed to track down some offense.

The Red Devils found it in a freshman playing his first career varsity game. Rookie Kolby McClure scored 15 points in the second half and hit four three-pointers for the game to push No. 4 Murtaugh past fifth-seeded Lighthouse Christian in the first round of the North Side Conference Tournament.

Lighthouse Christian played a zone defense against the Red Devils, which allowed McClure, the younger brother of Jerome guard and CSI signee Kaela McClure, to dive through and spot up in the defense’s gaps. His teammates found him open behind the line, and he drained big shot after big shot for the Red Devils.

“Kolby probably could have played varsity all year, but we had a lot of experienced guys up there. We couldn’t guarantee him a spot, so we kept him on junior varsity so he could learn and grow. It paid off tonight,” said Murtaugh head coach Clayton Nebeker.

The Red Devils took their first lead with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter, and took the lead for good in the final three minutes. Murtaugh senior Adan Saucedo scored nine of his 16 points in the pivotal fourth quarter. For Lighthouse Christian, senior Connor Bosma led the way with 13 points.

Murtaugh advances to take on top-seeded and top-ranked Dietrich Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Shoshone High School. Lighthouse Christian bumps over the loser’s bracket, where it will take on eighth-seeded Hansen Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Shoshone with both teams facing elimination.
