BUHL — After five consecutive games to start the season where Wood River had to sweat out the final seconds — four wins — the Wolverines breezed through their second straight victory, once again breathing easily in the second half, winning 43-14 at Buhl, which was celebrating homecoming.
Wood River went up 36-7 by halftime thanks to two long runs by Turner Maza, two Cade Schott touchdown passes and a fumble recovery score by Jubal Toothman.
“The whole key for us was staying mentally sharp, mentally focused regardless of what the score was,” said Wood River head coach Kevin Stilling. “I feel like the big thing for us tonight was being able to shake off mistakes. We had a couple of turnovers and the kids bounced right back.”
Wood River lost a fumble in the first half on a Buhl sack, leading to the Indians first score, but went on to rack up five straight touchdowns.
The Wolverines created three turnovers on defense, including interceptions from Maza and Stephen Balcos.
Offensively, Maza finished with 214 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Schott completed 14 of 25 passes for 161 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Wood River outgained Buhl by more than 250 yards.
“Kevin (Stilling) has done a great job with a great group of kids,” said Buhl head coach Seth Blick. “They are great at all points. They can spread you out, and hit you in a lot of different areas. They are an impressive football team. We will get back to the drawing board against a good Kimberly team.”
