RUPERT — The Minico Spartans claimed the 4A Great Basin Conference trophy in dominant fashion Friday night, knocking off the defending champion Wood River Wolverines 48-0 in Rupert.
The Spartans never allowed a Wolverine first down and, with the exception of a couple of turnovers, wasted no possessions in the first half.
Minico’s Colter May started the offense off with a bang, turning in a 73-yard touchdown reception on the Spartans’ first possession.
Spartan quarterback John Perrigot followed with the first of two one-yard keepers on the next series, and Nicky Caldera turned in another impressive reception from 62 yards out finish the quarter.
It was then the Spartan student section began chanting “This one’s over” before the first quarter had elapsed.
The home team wasn’t done yet though, and kept their collective foot on the accelerator until scoring their final points on a safety when linebacker Aiden VanTassell chased down a punt with the Wolverines backed up against the end zone for a safety.
“The kids really came out and played well,” said Minico head coach Tim Perrigot. “We wanted to finish the conference unblemished, 5-0 record. that was important to us. We wanted some momentum headed into the playoffs.”
“It feels great to bring [the trophy] back,” Spartan quarterback John Perrigot said. “It needs to be back here, and with the conference change, that trophy will be with us forever, so that’s really big.”
The elder Perrigot echoed that statement “We’ve won nine of the last 13 conference championships,” the coach said. “Next year, we head into a new conference and some new challenges, and I feel like we’re really going out on a good note.”
The Spartans will have a bye week before starting the playoffs the first week in November.
