Girls athlete of the week: Mattalyn Geddes, Twin Falls
Geddes earned athlete of the week nod for the second time in three weeks thanks to her record-breaking performance in distance running events at the 4A District 4 championships. The sophomore broke the Twin Falls school record in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:05.22 — more than 12 seconds better than her winning time at the Tiger-Grizz Invitational (5:17.63). The former school record was 5:10.44, set in 1988 by Jenny Hannah, according to Twin Falls coach Marty Grindstaff.
Geddes also showed off her superior endurance in the 3200-meter run. Her time of 11:10.58, more than 50 seconds in front of her closest competitor, was only two seconds off the Twin Falls school record. Geddes also won the 800-meter run (2:20.95), less than three seconds off the school-record mark.
Boys athlete of the week: Anthony Garcia, Canyon Ridge
The Canyon Ridge boys grabbed the boys 4A District 4 track and field title, snapping Twin Falls’ four-year streak, and Garcia earned 10 points for the Riverhawks with a high jump of 6 feet, 10 inches. Not only did that mark break the Canyon Ridge school record, which he formerly held, it is also higher than the 4A state tournament record (6-08).
The record high jump at state across all classifications for boys was set by Minico’s Tory Bailey (7-01) in 1993, when the Spartans were in the 5A classification. Garcia has finished second at the state tournament in the high jump the past two years.
