IHSAA State Wrestling day 2

Jake McGinnis, of Gooding, wrestles Kenneth Copley, of Sugar-Salem, in their championship match Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, during the state wrestling tournament at Holt Arena in Pocatello.

Because no high school girls sports were played this past week, two boys athletes received the latest athlete of the week honors (girls athlete of the week will return when spring sports begin).

This edition of athletes of the week features two state champion wrestlers who did more than win their respective weight classes over the weekend at Holt Arena.

Jake McGinnis, Gooding

The junior won his second straight 3A state title, and he nearly pinned every opponent he faced in the 285-pound weight class. In his first three matches, McGinnis earned pins in 54 seconds or less to reach the finals. He battled Sugar-Salem sophomore Kenneth Copely in the championship bout but earned a 5-3 decision. McGinnis lost two matches all season.

Ezekial Williamson, Jerome

Williamson, like McGinnis, is a junior who repeated as a state champion this past weekend. Only now, he is a three-time champion. Williamson, who lost four matches all season, pinned his first two opponents and earned a 13-1 major decision to reach the 4A 152-pound title match. There, he won a sudden victory over Minico’s Brian Borden for another title. If Williamson prevails again at state next year, he’ll become the 26th wrester in Idaho High School Activities Association wrestling history to win four individual state championships.
