Declo 48, Grangeville 28

MOSCOW — A 24-8 third quarter helped the Hornets pull away and advance to their third straight 2A semifinals.

Grangeville took early leads of 8-0 and 14-8, but Declo responded both times and led 16-14 at halftime.

“They came out and smacked us pretty hard,” Declo coach Kelly Kidd said. “We’ve given up opening drives all year, so it wasn’t panic time by any means.”

Two straight touchdowns and two two-point conversions to open the third quarter gave the Hornets a 32-14 lead, and they never looked back.

Declo junior running back Keegan Duncan had another big game, but Kidd was especially impressed with senior running back/defensive back Garrett Darrington.

“Garrett Darrington was just spectacular in the double wing,” Kidd said. “Defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. We forced them to go to passing, and Keegan shut down their best receiver.”

Declo (11-0) will face West Side at 8 p.m. Friday at Holt Arena in the semis. The Hornets beat the Pirates 42-7 in West Side on Oct. 13.

“We should win that game and get on with it,” Kidd said of next week’s matchup.

Genesee 86, Valley 46

MOSCOW — The Vikings couldn’t stop Genesee’s explosive offense in Saturday’s 1A Division I first-round playoff game in the Kibbie Dome.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 28-6 lead through one quarter, and they one-upped themselves with a 38-14 second quarter, which gave them a 66-20 halftime lead. Genesee led 80-26 going into the final quarter.

After an Oct. 6 home win over Raft River, the Vikings improved to 6-0. They also remained tied with Genesee for No. 1 in the 1A-DI media poll for the second straight week.

Injuries and tough opponents, among other factors, led to a four-game losing streak for to end Valley’s season.
