Valley 60, Gooding 55

GOODING – A strong start helped the 1A Division I Vikings beat the 3A Senators in their season opener.

“We started slow,” Gooding coach Chris Comstock said. “We played a lot better in the second half, but just couldn’t get back.”

Ben Christensen scored 14 points, and Jason Hardy added 12 for Valley, which plays at the Carey tournament this weekend.

Cody Faulkner scored 14 points, Jayden Mullins scored 12 and Shane Jennings and Cayden Loveland each scored 10 for Gooding, which plays at Declo on Friday.

KIMBERLY – The 3A Bulldogs rolled past the 4A Wolverines for a season-opening win.

“We were a little rough around the edges, but the kids played hard,” Kimberly coach Daren Garey said. “They were very intense, and that translated well.”

Connor Golay scored a game-high 23 points, and Trey Garey added 13 for Kimberly, which hosts American Falls on Friday.

Johnny Radford scored 12 points for Wood River, which opens conference play Friday at home against Twin Falls.

POCATELLO – The Spartans didn’t allow a field goal in the second half, allowing them to pull away in their season opener.

Several Minico boys basketball players are less than two weeks removed from a run to the 4A state football title game, which they lost to Skyline.

“To get off the beginning of the year with the win having short preparation coming into it, with football taking as much time as it did, I was thrilled with our energy and our effort,” Minico coach Ty Shippen said.

Larry Vega scored a game-high 13 points, Regan Povlsen scored 11, Jonathan Brumley chipped in 10 and Kobe Matsen had eight points and eight blocks for Minico, which hosts Rigby on Friday.

MALTA – After a slow start, the Trojans rolled to a nonconference victory in their season opener.

“We’re young,” Raft River coach Brian Poole said. “Times are gonna get a lot harder, but we hit some shots in the second quarter, hit some 3s that got us going.”

Justin Schumann scored a game-high 14 points, and Rylee Spencer scored 13 for Raft River, which hosts Declo on Wednesday.

Minico 47, Blackfoot 22

BLACKFOOT – The defending 4A state champion Spartans opened their season with a nonconference win over the 4A Broncos.

Minico won in 10 of the 13 weight classes. Avery Stimpson (113 pounds), Kinadro Campos (182) and Michael Martindale (285) all won by pin. Zak Allred (120), Dallas Andrade (132), Brian Borden (152), Anthony Rawson (160) and Tazyn Twiss (170) all won by major decision. Nate Long won by forfeit.

The Spartans wrestle at the Bucks Bags tournament in Boise this weekend.
