JEROME — The Tigers opened the Jerry Callen Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament with a 44-31 win over Elko. Grace Capps led Jerome with eight points.

“The girls came out and played well after the break,” said Jerome coach Jeremy Munroe. “They fought hard with lots of energy.”

Tigers sophomore Mercedes Bell finished with 12 points in the 47-31 loss to the Knights.

“Bishop Kelly came out and took it to us,” said Munroe. “We had a lot of shots, we just didn’t make too many. Bishop Kelly is a good team.”

Jerome will play Coeur d’Alene at 11 a.m. on Friday to end the tournament.

JEROME — Kimberly ended the first day of the Jerry Callen Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament at 0-2 after falling to Sugar-Salem and Coeur d’Alene.

Against the Diggers, the Bulldogs were led by junior Josie Schmitz with 10 points. Schmitz was also the leading scorer for Kimberly with 17 points in the loss to the Vikings.

Kimberly will play Rigby at noon on Friday to finish the tournament.

JEROME — The 4A Bobcats beat the 5A Vikings before losing to 3A Sugar-Salem on Thursday at the Jerry Callen Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament. No other details were available.

Burley will play Elko (Nev.) at 12:30 p.m. Friday to end the tournament.

Boys Basketball

Preston 75, Minico 59

RUPERT — The Spartans hosted the top-ranked 4A team in the state and took a loss.

“Preston is a good, well-balanced team,” said Minico coach Ty Shippen. “There is a reason they are the best team.”

Minico senior Regan Povlsen scored a team-high 17 points, followed by Kasen Carpenter with 16 and Kobe Matsen with 11.

Minico (7-3) is at Rigby on Wednesday.———————————-
