DIETRICH — There was a fall chill in the air Friday night when Dietrich hosted Lighthouse Christian. Both teams entered the final week of the regular season tied for second in the Sawtooth conference with identical 5-2 overall records. Both teams lost their non-conference season openers, then went 5-1 in conference, losing only to Carey.
Despite the cool temperature, the Blue Devil defense was hot, holding the Lions to only eight first downs in the game. Dietrich clinched second place and a home playoff game by shutting out Lighthouse 24-0.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter the Lions, facing 4-17 deep in their own territory, lined up to punt. A bad snap sent the ball over the punter’s head resulting in a safety. The ensuing kick rolled out of bounds and the Blue Devils opted to make Lighthouse re-kick the ball. Senior receiver Kade Shaw fielded the second kick at the Dietrich forty yard line and returned it 60 yards for the score.
“Kade Shaw is an outstanding athlete,” said Lighthouse head coach Cory Holloway. “In eight-man football, an athlete like that can change the game.”
With starting quarterback Brady Power out for the remainder of the year, big brother Andrew Power made his second start of the season for the Blue Devils. Early in the second quarter, Power found sophomore receiver Raygn Robertson for a 27-yard touchdown. The score stretched the team’s lead to 18 points.
“Andy is kind of new to the position,” said Robertson. “This is his second game starting, and he did really good dropping his passes behind their ‘D’.”
Late in the second quarter, Lighthouse had their best opportunity of the night, driving to the Blue Devils four-yard line before junior quarterback Brandon Houser was stuffed for a one-yard loss on fourth down.
“We knew Lighthouse was going to run the ball at us pretty hard, and we knew we had to be really stout on defense and try and challenge them up front,” said Dietrich head coach Rick Astle. “That’s our first shutout of the season, and I thought the defense played really well.”
In the fourth quarter, Kade Shaw took a hand-off 15 yards for his second score and the final touchdown of the game.
“I just try not to disappoint the team,” said Shaw. “Just give it my all and come away with the win. We have a great team and we’re loving it.”
Dietrich will host the District 5/6 third seed in the first round of the 1A-DII playoffs. Lighthouse will travel to the District 5/6 second seed.
