FILER • The Buhl girls and Kimberly boys won 3A District IV titles while Declo swept the 2A girls and boys Thursday afternoon.

There were monstrous performances throughout, with some athletes winning multiple gold medals (first places).

Filer’s Abby Bitzenburg won the 3200 meter, 800 meter, and finished second in the 1600 meter, nearly sweeping the three events for the second year in a row.

Despite the success, things have been much different in Bitzenburg’s senior campaign.

Asthma.

“I got sick at the beginning of the year and I’ve had to drop out of a few races because I can’t breath,” Bitzenburg said. “There is definitely not as much oxygen, it is much less easy to race this year.”

In fact, Bitzenburg’s newly developed asthma has forced her to miss both events and practices. Those around her have even gotten so scared after Bitzenburg’s races that they’ve contemplated calling a medic, the senior said.

But Bitzenburg races on, and while her times aren’t quite what they were last year, she heads back to state in three events.

“I try to not pressure myself beforehand, but I know it’s a possibility I’ll have to drop out of the race,” Bitzenburg said. “I take medicine and do what I can. Last year it was really easy to win my races. This year has been really hard. I try to take deep breaths and keep from panicking.”

Bitzenburg, who said her condition has improved over the last few days, said she’s had to change her strategy as a runner, not getting out in front like she used to and instead following the pack and winning with a kick.

On the boys side, Kimberly’s Zach Wright, the quarterback for the Bulldogs football team, had a huge day.

Wright swept the hurdles (setting a personal record in the 300 meter hurdles) and won the 100-meter race to go along with a relay victory.

“I had competition from my team, kids who thought they would beat me,” Wright said. “I was like, ‘that is not happening.’”

Filer sophomore Mary-Kate Marshall won the 1600 meter and 300 meter hurdles with a personal best.

“I have been really working on my form,” Marshall said. “My biggest challenge is getting out of the blocks and hitting the hurdle with the right stride.”

Gooding’s Bailey Price won the pole vault, 100 meter hurdles and finished second in triple jump... for the second straight year.

“It’s exactly the same,” Price said, acknowledging that even her times and distances were virtual matches.

The junior has a big appetite for the state meet, however, where she intends to break her personal records.

“(Districts) gives you a little feel of state, but not the whole thing,” Price said. “Your nerves just go crazy.”

After sitting out track last year while recovering from injury, Buhl’s Kasey Crossland won both the long and high jump, just as he did as a sophomore.

“I’m just trying to add some state titles to this class,”Crossland said. “As many as we can.”

There were many other outstanding performances on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Times-News intends to catch up with more athletes at the state track meet.
