TWIN FALLS — Valley quarterback Mike Elorrieta scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first quarter Friday night and the Vikings’ defense intercepted a trio of Lighthouse Christian passes en route to a 44-6 halftime lead over the Lions in the season-opener for both teams.
Valley opened the game with an onside kick recovery and scored in less than a minute-and-a half on Elorrieta’s first rushing touchdown. The senior made his first career varsity start under center Friday and scored on a pair of read-option keepers to cap off the Vikings' first two drives of the night.
Lighthouse Christian’s Connor Bosma threw a swing pass to Eric Silva on fourth-and-5 that went for 12 yards and a touchdown to bring the Lions within reach at 16-6. But Bosma threw the first of his three first-half interceptions shortly thereafter; Tucker Waters took the ball 25 yards to paydirt and gave Valley a 22-6 lead after a quarter.
Kodi Burk, Calvin Korom and Bryce Tvrdy each scored rushing touchdowns in the second to give Valley a 44-6 halftime lead.
