SHOSHONE — Each of the six teams playing in the district tournament appeared to have the opening game jitters. But the final results had #2 Lighthouse Christian, #3 Carey, and #4 Dietrich all with wins.

The Blue Devils picked up the first victory of the tournament with the win over Hansen and will face #1 Castleford at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.

After a tough early battle with Richfield, the Panthers withered the storm against the Tigers for the win and will face Lighthouse Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Both the Lions and the Red Devils had some ragged play at both ends of the court but in the final results, Lighthouse Christian doubled the Murtaugh scoring and was victorious.

Hansen will play at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Richfield and Murtaugh play at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 in a loser-out game.

Lighthouse Christian 42, Murtaugh 20

“It took us a little while to start playing together,” said Lighthouse Christian coach Tia Standlee. “We wanted to play better defense and keep Murtaugh from getting on a run.”

The results were pretty close to what the game plan intended as the Red Devils had only four players in the scoring column with junior Abigail Suitter finishing with eight points.

Meanwhile, junior Chloe Gomez and Allie Brandsma led Lighthouse Christian in scoring with 21 of the Lions 42 points as Gomez finished with 11 and Brandsma had 10.

“We are a really young team,” said Murtaugh coach Adam Johnson. “We start three sophomores and two juniors. We’ve come a long ways from where we started and we are finally showing some improvement.”

Dietrich 61, Hansen 31

The Blue Devils came out and threw a zone against the Huskies but traded it in for the man defense as the game wore on.

“The zone was lazy, with no intensity,” said Dietrich coach Acey Shaw. “The girls pushed the ball up the court better in the second half.”

Dietrich sophomore Matigan Bingham was the top scorer for the game with 14 points and senior Ariel Shaw followed with 10. Shyla Brown scored a team-high 10 points for Hansen.

“Once we got our jitters out, we played much better,” said Dietrich senior Ryann Perron. “We found some energy and our mental game picked up and our defense got tougher.”

The Huskies seemed at times to show a tendency to hesitate to take some open shots. head coach TeeJay Berry said much of his team’s reluctance stemmed from poor execution.

“We weren’t executing or doing what we wanted especially on offense,” said Hansen coach TeeJay Berry.

Carey 35, Richfield 21

Carey coach Merrilee Sears thought the Panthers should have been more dominating inside, but did a better job of sealing the zone in the second half.

“We had the first half jitters and missed some early shots,” said Sears. “The second half, our defense rebounded well and we played some good team basketball.”

Richfield coach Buck Hendren felt the Tigers played pretty well for three quarters and made it a game.

Sophomore Kodi Green led Carey with 10 points and Richfield freshman Kyndyl Allen had a team-high nine points.
