TWIN FALLS — As one of the top rodeo programs in the country, the College of Southern Idaho always hopes to win for the home folks.
That’s exactly what the Golden Eagles did this past weekend for the 42nd annual College of Southern Idaho Intercollegiate Rodeo at the Eldon Evans Expo Center in the Shane Davis Arena.
The CSI men’s team entered the weekend in first place in the Rocky Mountain Region standings, followed by Utah Valley, Weber State, Idaho State and Snow College. At the CSI rodeo, the Golden Eagles finished first, ISU was second, UVU and Weber tied for third and Snow was fifth.
So with another top finish, CSI held at the top in the region.
“We had a really good crowd on Friday and a super crowd on Saturday,” said CSI coach Steve Birnie. “Anytime we have full bleachers, it’s a great night.”
The men’s all-around winner for the two-night rodeo was CSI cowboy Cody Ruby from Grantsville, Utah. Ruby was the top rider for the weekend in saddle bronc with scores of 71 on Friday and 35 on Last Chance on Saturday. Luke Logan came in second with 63, and Shaun Mentaberry tied for third with 56.
Klancy Krenka posted the best scores each performance in bareback with a total of 142 points, scoring 72 on Friday and adding a 70-point ride on I’m So Fancy on Saturday night.
Teammates Bronc Marriott and Peio Laughlin each earned 62 points and split third place. JorDee Nielsen managed to stay aboard Magic Day for the full eight seconds and secured 64 points to win bull riding.
Ruby, with a fifth-place finish, was one of five members of the men’s team that made it back to the short go in tie down, along with Caleb Logan, Jake Logan, Hazen Smith and Quentin Anseth, who tied for sixth-place. In steer wrestling, there were two CSI participants in the short go, Hazen Smith and Krenka, with Smith finishing third.
After a first-place finish over the weekend, the CSI women’s team (1948.33) held fast in the second slot in the region trailing only UVU (2427.5). In winning, CSI totaled 368.33 points, UVU was second (365), Colorado Mesa University third (260), Utah State fourth (250) and ISU fifth (240).
Five CSI cowgirls qualified for the short go in barrels, and four placed in the top six. Shalee King was second in average at 30.0, Katelyn Perkins recorded the best time of 14.83 Saturday and combined with Friday time of 15.43 for a third at 30.26 and Taylor Hurley was 31.20 for fifth place. Ashtyn Carlson had the fastest time Friday, running the pattern in 14.68 seconds and was 19.87 on Saturday for 34.55 finishing sixth.
Perkins, from Geneva, competed in District V in the past before becoming a member of the CSI rodeo program.
“I really like it here,” said Perkins, who finished fifth in all-around. “I grew up around here and always liked the people and the community. You are more on your own in college and you have to be more independent. As a member of the CSI team, we push each other to make us better. Steve is a good coach that is very supportive and makes it a lot of fun.”
Perkins was the lone CSI member to make it back to breakaway in the short go and recorded times of 3.5 and 4.3 for an average of 7.8 seconds, good enough for fifth place. Taylor Hurley and Ashtyn Carlson competed in goats on Saturday, and Hurley tied for sixth place.
Team ropers Charly Ball and Klancy Krenka and Quentin Anseth and Cody Ruby made it back to the short go but neither team was able to record a time on Saturday night.
“What makes this rodeo a success is all the hard work that everyone puts into it,” said Birnie. “The kids work hard and we have high expectations that we hold them to. We want them to succeed and we try to help them get to their goals. We are able to compete against larger four-year schools because we put in the time and effort. We have the backing of the school.”
The CSI rodeo team heads to Weber State in Ogden, Utah from March 30-31 for its next rodeo.
