LAS VEGAS — The College of Southern Idaho women’s basketball team finished the CSN Holiday Basketball Classic with a strong win over Lake Region CC.
Chesney Campbell was the lone Golden Eagle with double-digit points, but she also earned a double-double for CSI with 10 points (4-for-8) and 10 rebounds. Jerome native Kaela McClure had a balanced game, with eight points (3-for-8), six assists and four steals.
The Golden Eagles capitalized on Lake Region’s poor ball handling, forcing 27 turnovers on the night and snatching 17 steals.
The women’s team moves to 15-3 with the win and will open Scenic West play when it hosts Snow College on Saturday, Jan. 6.
South Plains 69, College of Southern Idaho 65
MESA, Ariz. — The No. 9 College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball team was upset by South Plains in the Fiesta Bowl Shootout, ending its 13-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles scored only 28 points in the first half. They kept it close to the end, with Charles Jones Jr. sinking three-straight free throws to make it 67-65 with eight seconds left.
By most stats, the two teams were very evenly matched. Rebounds were 47-46 CSI and turnovers were 15-14 South Plains. But the Golden Eagles field-goal percentage of 28.6 percent (20.7 percent from 3-point range) made the difference.
Jones Jr. led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 19 points, but had a tough night from the field, shooting 5-for-20 and 3-for-10 from 3-point range. Jake Hendricks and Danya Kingsby rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 and 12, respectively.
The loss drops the men’s basketball team to 15-2 on the season. It will finish the Fiesta Bowl Shootout tomorrow against Mesa CC.
