SALT LAKE CITY — Fresh off a loss to Snow in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener, the College of Southern Idaho women’s basketball team earned a 50-47 upset win over Salt Lake Community College, the No. 7 team in the latest NJCAA Division I poll.
CSI didn’t take a lead until 34 seconds remaining, when Tiena Afu scored to give the Golden Eagles a 48-47 lead. After an empty possession for SLCC, Jerome High School graduate Kaela McClure hit two free throws to extend CSI’s lead to 50-47. SLCC’s Tia Hay missed the would-be game-tying 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Bruins 40 to 32 percent from the field and 70 to 42 percent from the free-throw line.
Afu led CSI with 11 points, and McClure scored eight. Filer graduate Meghan Hughes finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
CSI (16-4, 1-1) continues road conference play at Saturday against Colorado Northwestern CC.
Big second half leads SLCC men over CSI
SALT LAKE CITY — The No. 4-ranked Salt Lake Community College men’s basketball team beat the No. 9 Golden Eagles 84-64 at home Thursday night for an SWAC victory.
The Bruins led 32-31 at halftime, and they outscored CSI 52-33 in the second half to pull away.
The Golden Eagles shot 38.3 percent from the field, 28 percent from 3-point range and 57.9 percent from the free-throw line in the game.
CSI sophomore Charles Jones Jr. led all players with 22 points (7-of-13 on field goals, 4-of-8 on 3s). Thomas Khalid scored 12 points (5-of-8 on FGs, 2-of-4 on 3s), and Tommy Burton had eight points (3-of-6 on FGs) and seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles (17-3, 1-1) travel to Rangely, Colo., where they will face Colorado Northwestern CC on Saturday.
