Quartet shines at opening rodeo

Four members of District VI came out firing over the weekend to capture back-to-back wins as the high school rodeo season opened in the Shane Davis Arena of the College of Southern Idaho’s Eldon Evans Expo Center.

Kyndal Stradley of Filer picked up her second victory in barrels with a time of 15.45 seconds Saturday night after running a 15.575 on Friday. Kord Whiting of Declo put down a 4.8-second run on Saturday to best his Friday time of 5.37 in steer wrestling. Tie-down roper Tyler Wadsworth of Kimberly roped his calf in 12.54 seconds Saturday, improving by over two seconds his Friday time of 14.66. In breakaway roping, Alyssa Koch of Filer used a strong run of 2.80 seconds on Saturday to capture her second win, bettering Friday’s 3.80-second run.

Brady Manning of Oakley was the only contestant in saddle bronc for the weekend to stay aboard for the full eight seconds, scoring 67 points on Little Wayne Saturday night.

“Awesome horse,” said Manning. “She was strong. Her first few jumps made the ride.”

Manning also competes in calf roping and team roping, but readily acknowledges his favorite.

“After that, saddle bronc for sure,” he said.

An equipment change made all the difference for Zackery Toner as the Minico cowboy posted 67 points on Air Mail to capture the bull riding.

“I switched ropes,” said Toner. “My old one wasn’t nearly as stiff, and it was really pretty cheap. Now I’m set.”

Toner wasn’t even sure if he was going to be able to compete in the opening event after a bull stepped on the back of his calf two weeks ago during practice.

Other winners Saturday included Kelli Kindig of Minico with an 8.03-second run in goat tying and Tanisha Adams of Declo with a 21.378-second time in poles. Glade Hall and Kindee Wilson of Filer made a strong run of 10.92 seconds to take team roping.

There were no qualified rides in bareback as all riders were dumped to the dirt both Friday and Saturday nights.

Minico senior Shelby Schlund, the 2010 District VI rodeo queen, is also a contestant in goats, barrels and poles.

“Being a queen is not only about beauty and brains,” said Schlund. “I compete and I like to think that I am an equal. It’s been fun meeting new people in all the different districts.”

Schlund has also organized a raffle aimed at raising funds for scholarships.

District VI action returns to CSI next weekend with a 7 p.m. Friday performance with slack following. On Saturday, barrel and pole slack are scheduled at 2 p.m. with a 7 p.m. performance and remaining slack to follow.
