I recently participated in Scouting for Food. I was surprised with how many cans of expired food people donated. The Scouts performing the work went to great efforts to collect, sort, and stock shelves at the local food pantries. This year we had to discard about one third of the total donations due to expired donations. That is a lot of waste. I believe that Scouting for Food is much more than cleaning out your pantry. It is about giving back to the community. I would also like to thank everyone who donated their food to give back to the community. Despite the number of non-usable donations, a great number of usable food donations were received and that helped make up for the amount that was lost. Many people will benefit from this program.

When you donate to any food drive you should make sure all donations are usable. Not only did we get rid of canned foods we got rid of boxes of rice and noodles and even some mustard and much more. Please be sure to check that all donations are not expired.
