A bill introduced to the ldaho Legislature which would have limited a parents right to withhold medical treatment for their children failed to even make it to committee. This bill is necessary and long overdue. Lee Heider R-Twin Falls, chairman of the Senate's Health and Welfare Committee, refused to even hold a hearing to amend the law on faith healing. I'm sure Mr. Heider and most of the Republican legislators would claim to be Pro-Life, but they seem to be changing their stance to pro-choice in this case — the choice of the parents to withhold medical attention for their child based on religious grounds. This is not the choice of the child who is suffering and in pain.

Mr. Heider bases his argument on freedom of speech. But where is the voice of the child, who may die without medical attention? Abortion is wrong; it is the taking of a life that will never be again. Purposely denying medical attention for a child is also wrong and a crime. It is the responsibility of a parent to safeguard the safety, health and welfare of their children. If they fail in this responsibility it is the duty of the government to protect the child. In this case, the Idaho Legislature has failed to do their duty.
