Two College of Southern Idaho basketball players face marijuana charges
Two College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball players were arrested Tuesday night and charged with marijuana possession.
Jerrold Brooks, a starting guard for CSI’s national championship team, and recent transfer Luke Cothron were arraigned Wednesday in Twin Falls County 5th District Court on one count each of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.
Both players have been suspended by the school, which on Wednesday offered no comment other than a brief statement.
“Two members of the College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball team have been suspended pending further investigation for a violation of team rules,” Athletic Director Joel Bate said in a written statement.
Brooks, 19, and Cothron, 20, who was identified in the arrest record as Marquiez Donte Cothron, were arrested at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.
According to Twin Falls Police Officer Ruben Murillo’s report, they were found sitting in a vehicle filled with white smoke on the 1900 block of Bitterroot Drive in Twin Falls. Murillo said Brooks, who was driving, drove away when the officer approached the vehicle, but was pursued and stopped in the intersection of Julie Lane and Centennial Street. Murillo said Brooks and Cothron were in possession of a container of 8.2 grams of marijuana, while Cothron had another 0.7 grams on his person.
Murillo said Brooks told him a girl gave him the marijuana at a bar in Kansas, where CSI played in the NJCAA Tournament last week.
Bate said the school is “still gathering information” and won’t have further comment until it concludes its own investigation of the incident.
The players both face May 3 pretrial conferences in Twin Falls.
Brooks, a 5-foot-11 freshman, was the Golden Eagles’ second-leading scorer this season at 15.4 points per game. Cothron, a 6-foot-8 forward from Huntsville, Ala., arrived in Twin Falls this month and enrolled in late-start classes. He originally signed with Auburn University, but did not qualify academically. He made brief stops this season at the University of Massachusetts and the University of New Orleans before coming to CSI.

- Like wow man, this guys a starting guard, a national champion, and smart.(read in tommy's voice please) 8.2 the cops must not have cancelled the bag weight or he split it and got the bigger portion. Either way he was smart enough to smoke the other guys first. The stupid part he drove believing he was getting somewhere. They probably hooked him at the green light. Traffic citation, yes. Crime against his fellow man, I just don't see it.

- These kids just won a NJCAA championship. Everybody that is supporting CSI men's basketball is excited. Gifts and congratulations can come at you every minute. Some people give gifts of favorite tournament highlights. Perhaps some give gifts of their own challenges now over-come. Most can only applaud and admire the commitment and dedication these student-athletes have endured to make it to the very elite in their chosen sport. GO CSI GOLDEN EAGLES. You will SOAR past this.

- This incident reminds me of an exact scene in a movie from the 70's called "Up in Smoke"(with Cheech & Chong).It was REAL popular when many of todays policemen were young and impressionable.Sometimes there is a reason Police and parents seem to have eyes in the back of their heads.

- This story is inaccurate. He's a successful athlete. Everyone knows potheads are couch potatoes who have dogs that speak to them. Also people don't just give away that much goodness, even in Kansas.

- So who exactly is the victim in this so-called "crime" of theirs? Brooks should have known better than to drive under the influence, so if anything that should be the only _legitimate_ charge.
