Elaine Martin Vogeler, 85, passed away on February 4, 2018 at the Cassia Memorial Hospital surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born April 25, 1932 in Nampa, Idaho she was raised in Jerome by her mother, Lillian Gott Lundquist Smith and step-father, Clarence Smith. She graduated from Jerome High School and attended nursing school in Pocatello.
She married James Martin of Oakley in 1952. They farmed for many years in Hazelton and Burley and were very active in state politics. They had three children. She co-managed the family clothing store “Guys ‘N’ Dolls” in the Overland Shopping Center. After her divorce, she lived and worked in Ketchum and served as the Blaine County Republican Chairman. She served as Secretary of the Idaho State Republican Party and was the first woman hired to the Idaho House of Representatives as Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms. She stayed active in politics her entire life and served as a Precinct Committeeman in Jerome. She also owned and operated a wine shop in Boise.
In 1995, she married Gus Vogeler of Jerome and they traveled extensively to hunt and fish. She joined Safari Club International in 1996. She became a Life Member of SCIF Sables and, in 2007, established the SCIF Sables Elaine and Gus Vogeler Hunting Heritage Scholarship at the University of Idaho. She loved to golf, ski, and fish for sturgeon on the Snake River. She belonged to the Jerome Sage Hens Quilt Club and sewed many works of art.
She is survived by her children, Jamie (Kitty) Martin of Hagerman, Stephanie Martin of Walla Walla, WA, and Becky (Kenny) Harper of Burley. She also leaves a brother, Lynn Smith of Bend, Oregon. Elaine was very proud of her 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 S. Lincoln Avenue in Jerome on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Jerome Cemetery.
