Sept. 30, 1934—Feb. 2, 2018

BURLEY – Bonnie Wayment Sumbardo, our loving mother, grandmother, sister and wife, passed from this earthly life on Friday, February 2, 2018, after a six-month illness at the age of 83.

Bonnie was born in Ogden, Utah, on September 30, 1934, the oldest child of Byron Slater and Elsie Elizabeth (Gibson) Wayment. The family moved to Burley, Idaho, when Bonnie was about six years old. She attended the View School until the sixth grade and later finished her education at Burley High School. She graduated with the BHS Class of 1953, as valedictorian. After graduation, she was employed at Idaho Bank and Trust in Burley and Greenwalt’s Furniture. Bonnie also played weekends and some nights in a dance band with K. Clark (a local radio announcer), Al Thaxton and Boyd Earl. It was then she met and later married Don Lockwood – who also was an announcer at KBAR. Bonnie and Don had two daughters, Karen and Melanie. She and Don were later divorced, but remained close friends.

Bonnie married Robert A. Sumbardo in 1964 and they lived in Ellensburg, Washington, where she gained another daughter, Lois. Bonnie was employed by a local bank in Ellensburg. She was active in theatre, was a talented pianist, and played for many weddings and funerals. She was church organist at Grace Lutheran Church in Wenatchee, Washington, for many years. Bonnie and Bob took an active part in community and civic affairs. She and Bob loved theatre and taught their families to enjoy many live Broadway plays in Seattle and at community theatres. Her favorite singing group was and is the Liberty Quartet from Meridian, Idaho. She was a true ‘groupie’ and we saw them in many different states.

After retirement, Bonnie and Bob moved to West Seattle and enjoyed living on the Puget Sound area watching ferries and other boats come and go. The sisters particularly enjoyed December weekend of plays – often seeing three to five plays in one weekend.

After the death of her husband Bob, she moved back to Burley in 2005 and lived in a duplex by her sister, Claretta.

She was an active member of the Burley United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist from time to time. She loved PEO, sang in the church choir and enjoyed her many special friends. She was happy being in Burley with her family and grandchildren.

Bonnie is survived by her daughters, Lois (Craig) Rinehart, Karen Fulbright, and Melanie Brennan; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; her sisters, Claretta Shaffer and Colleen (LaMont) Carson; and a brother, Kent Wayment.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Sumbardo; her former husband, Don Lockwood; a grandson, James R. Feeney III; her parents, Byron and Elsie Wayment; and two brothers, Garr and Jim Wayment.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, at the United Methodist Church, 450 E. 27th St., in Burley, with the Rev. D. Scott Allen officiating. Burial will follow at the View Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, February 9, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 1 until 1:45 p.m. Saturday preceding the service at the church.
