March 18, 1925 – November 1, 2017

Betty Faye Mayo of Filer passed away November 1st, 2017 at Twin Falls St. Luke’s hospital, with family by her side.

Betty was born in Burlingame, Kansas on March 18, 1925. She was the fifth of 13 children born to Roy and Nellie Bickford.

Betty’s family moved to Soldier, Kansas prior to her starting the first grade and graduated from Soldier High School in 1942. While in high school, she took numerous classes in education and started teaching at a country school upon graduation. Betty taught school for three years. In December 1942, while Betty was teaching in a small country school near Soldier, Kansas, she needed a Santa Clause for a Christmas program. LeRoy Mayo was volunteered by his cousin and they were married shortly thereafter on February 20, 1943 and were married for 68 years.

Betty and LeRoy moved to Idaho’s Salmon Tract in early summer of 1945. While there, Betty was approached by Hollister school board officials to teach at Hollister. She accepted and taught school for two years, during which time they moved to Hollister. Betty then accepted a position in the School lunch program and also started driving school bus. In April 1972, Betty and LeRoy moved to Filer, when Betty was promoted to Manager of the Filer Lunch program. She continued to drive bus hauling school children as well as the bus for school activities.

After one year in Filer, Betty discontinued her school bus driving and retired from the Filer Lunch program in 1987 after 15 years.

After retiring, Betty and LeRoy traveled extensively in their motor home—camping, fishing and riding their motorcycles, and participated in bus tours sponsored by local travel companies.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband LeRoy; her five sisters – Opal, Doris, Arlene, Barbara and Janice Sue; her five brothers LeRoy, Clifford, Wendell, Darrell and Leland. She is survived by her two brothers Kenneth and Leo; numerous sister/brother-in laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.
