RUPERT – A Rupert man lost his life Thursday in a two-vehicle collision south of Jackpot, Nev.

Carter Smith, 71, was a passenger in a 1998 GMC pickup driven by Rodney Butterworth, 76, of Rupert.

The rear-end collision that killed Smith was at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29.

Butterworth and Smith were headed south on U.S. Highway 93 from Jackpot, Nev., when Butterworth slowed to make a left-hand turn onto a dirt road, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Jake Harp.

Wayne Shipley, 49, of Nampa was also southbound on U.S. Highway 93, in a commercial semi-truck with triple trailers. The semi-truck hit Butterworth’s vehicle, which spun around and landed on the shoulder of the road, Harp said.

Butterworth sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Twin Falls hospital.

“There was no sign of impairment in any of the parties involved,” Harp said.
