TWIN FALLS • Five hopefuls are seeking to secure a landing Evel Knievel never made.

The five have come the closest of any group of daredevils to achieving approval for a Snake River Canyon jump since the famous Knievel made his try in 1974.

To jump from the original mound of dirt Knievel used on the south side of the canyon, thrill-seekers first need approval from the Idaho Department of Lands to descend onto the north side.

With the 40th anniversary of the failed Knievel jump approaching in less than a year, national daredevils are pushing for that approval.

Only one will be awarded the right to use the land though, said Emily Callihan, Land Department spokeswoman.

The winner will be chosen Sept. 27 after each applicant submits a competing bid to lease the landing site. The competitive auction is required by the department if more than party is interested in using the land, she said.

The two-year lease requires an annual $25,000 rent, and the lessee must give 3 percent of his main revenue source plus 5 percent of any other revenue streams to the state Land Department.

“Applicants must also get approval from the city of Twin Falls before the lease goes into effect Nov. 1,” Callihan said.

City officials now are finalizing a permitting process to be presented to the city council.

Forty years ago, Knievel’s stunt drew thousands of onlookers, and Twin Falls gained national attention even after the celebrated jumper failed to make it to the other side.

Twin Falls could regain that national attention, especially since the five applicants come from almost all corners of the country.

Locally, Omega Point Productions was formed in TwinFalls by Scott Record. His partner is Scott Truax, whose father designed Knievel’s rocket. They have designed a replica of the rocket used in 1974 and have it under construction.

Another applicant, Ping Pong Productions, is based out of Los Angeles The production company has produced several ghost and UFOtelevision series.

Adrenaline Nation Inc., from Perris, Calif., features independent films, adrenaline sports, extreme sports and adventure programming.

The final two applicants are REODevelopment Group LLC out of Elmwood Park, Ill., and Beckley Media LLC from Bridgeport,Texas.

Actually Spuds, we filed a permit long before Ed. He only decided to do it on his own after I told him he'd never fit in our rocket.

The only issue I see is that Beckley Media started this process long before the others did and they all jumped on to the band wagon after they realized that it was feasible to get the authorization to make the jump, now they have to compete for it. Sad the article does not give him the credit for the leg work the others did not have to go through because he opened the door for them. Beckley Media started this over 1 year ago with the government the rest jumped in recently.

I would hope that we give the local company the opportunity to achieve national fame. especially if they were involved in any way with the original attempt. that is a big enough story line in its self.
