Ketchum hospital gets back to normal after lockdown
KETCHUM — All appeared almost normal at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center on Wednesday, after officials made a mid-morning lockdown to increase security at the hospital.
Patients and visitors came and went, but only through a single entrance guarded by non-uniformed security guards. Other doors were blocked off by signs, or hospital staff directing people to the secured entrance.
The lockdown was precipitated by a violation of a protection order, said Lt. Jay Davis, spokesman for the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office. “It was related to a domestic situation,” he said.
According to Davis, a woman was visiting her sick child in the hospital when she received a text message that read, “I know where you are,” from a man against whom she had a protection order. Neither the man nor the woman have been publicly identified by the sheriff’s office.
Law enforcement has been seeking the man, Davis said, but as of 5 p.m. Wednesday he had not shown up at the hospital. “Nobody’s able to find him at this point,” Davis said.
The hospital has remained functional throughout the lockdown, with the emergency room open, all medical appointments proceeding as scheduled, and visitors allowed in, according to Tanya Keim, spokeswoman for the hospital.
“We have had a patient security issue. Basically we’re going into precautionary measures, just to ensure the safety of our patients and staff,” Keim said.
The hospital has gone into lockdown once before in the 10-year history of its current location, during the Castle Rock fire of 2007, but staff participate regularly in lockdown drills, she said.
